The Expressive Arts

The expressive arts are an innovative and radically inclusive field of education and therapy which combines the visual arts, movement, drama, music, writing and other creative processes for the purposes of personal growth and community development.

Ashley's therapeutic approach is rooted in the philosophy that when we engage in creative processes, we tap into the vital energy, wisdom, and power to heal that is inherent within each of us.

Personal Growth & Community Development: When we engage in the creative process, we encounter our inner lives; through creative expression, we bring our stories into the world in a meaningful way. Entering consciously into the “serious play” of the creative process, we are able to more deeply understand our histories, heal our wounds, and discover our gifts. Ashley provides artful structures through which clients can encounter themselves and the world in new ways; a supportive environment in which personal truths can be expressed and the authentic self witnessed; and resources for clients to cultivate lasting change in individual and community life.

Art is for Everyone:  The expressive arts approach values the creative spark in everyone, regardless of relative skill level or experience. It is the sensitive rendering of the creator’s authentic experience that catalyzes healing and change, rather than technical prowess. Whether or not one has previously identified as an "artist" in any medium, expressive arts practice naturally deepens each person’s connection to his/her creative source and expands the art-making process into a medium for personal awareness and growth.

Embodied Arts Therapy uses the Tamalpa Life/Art Process, a body-based expressive arts approach that integrates movement/dance, visual arts, creative writing, sound, performance techniques and therapeutic practices. The Tamalpa Process supports personal, interpersonal and social transformation, teaching new models for health, psychology, art and communication. Ashley is a Certified Tamalpa Practitioner by Tamalpa Institute.
